In a region long deprived of critical federal infrastructure and sustained institutional presence, one man is quietly rewriting history with legislative precision, purposeful vision, and an uncommon passion for justice and inclusion. That man is Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu , Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and a shining star not just for Bende Federal Constituency, but for Abia state and the entire Southeast geopolitical zone.
For decades, successive administrations made promises that echoed through the hills and valleys of the Southeast, yet the scars of marginalization persisted. The wounds of the civil war may have faded, but the absence of the promised Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (RRR) left a glaring gap, one that remained largely unaddressed until Kalu stepped into the arena.
Today, that gap is being filled with tangible realities, thanks to the legislative brilliance and strategic diplomacy of Ben Kalu. Through his relentless efforts, South East Development Commission became a reality, the Federal College of Education in Bende, Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Item, and the Federal University in Okigwe are no longer dreams deferred, they are signed, sealed, and on their way to becoming cornerstones of educational and socio-economic transformation. Even the Nigerian Institute of Languages in Aba, long neglected and almost abandoned has now been uplifted into federal institution.
I recall how hard Hon. Solomon Adaelu, worked, how valiantly he pushed for a federal university with bills that made it through rigorous readings in both chambers but were ultimately left unsigned the presidency.
The difference today is the strategic relationship that exists between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Rt.Hon. Benjamin Kalu and his understanding of timing, strategy, and above all, how to harmonize the will of the people with the levers of federal power.
His leadership philosophy is targeted at the critical Infrastructure that reaches the neglected, education that empowers the voiceless and Legislation that fills the gap created injustice, exclusionism, and balance in infrastructure
This is not mere rhetoric. It is measurable, visible, and transformational.
Unlike the loud and performative politics that dominate our media space, Ben Kalu’s brand of leadership is quiet but seismic. He is the kind of public servant who doesn’t just represent people, he redefines the value of representation.
For the first time, the Southeast is no longer pleading to be noticed; it is being included, and it is being respected courtesy of Utabiri Bende
In just under two years, Kalu has achieved what no other legislator from the Southeast or even the broader South-South has done in decades.
That is not just an opinion it is a verifiable fact.
He is not building monuments to himself, he is building foundations for future generations. He is showing Nigeria that true federalism can work when leaders choose service over self, and action over applause.
The Southeast has found in Rt.hon. Ben Kalu a bridge to national relevance, and the nation has found in him a legislator whose work transcends political tribes and speaks the universal language of development.
In a political geography hungry for leaders who deliver, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu is a full-course meal.
Abia needs more of his kind.
