Opinion: MID TERM REPORT
Umunneochi LGA Under Chief Ifeanyi Madu. So Far So Good.
Written By Hon. Tobias Egeonu
In less than one year of this current administration under Hon. Chief Ifeanyi Madu, there have been gradual but steady steps in delivering good governance.
His administration met a problem on ground in the nature of kidnapping and criminalities around the Umunneochi axis. The Chairman swung into action and had achieved tremendous result in that regard. At a time, inhabitants and visitors of Umunneochi became so apprehensive that their movements were restricted. It took the untiring efforts of the chairman to bring normalcy to the area by the ways he tackled the menace head-on. In response to the overbearing problem, he started building a one-storey security tower along Lomara Nneato road just before Spritan University. He has through his local Vigilantees launched several offensives against ther Fulani herders, clearing their camps inside Lomara Nneato forest and chasing them away. With the use of local Vigilante Groups, he was able to establish control over the territory. There is no gainsaying that, Umunneochi LGA chairman Chief Ifeanyi Madu ranks first in the area of security among all the seventeen LGAs.
The chairman have started construction of over 200 Lockups shops and Ultra modern park at Eke Eziama Nneato. The project which would have gone to advance stage by now was stalled by community clash of interests. Luckily, the initial set-back have been overcome and the project on-going as at press time.
The Chairman has secured approval from the office of the governor of Abia state Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu for the establishment of Seed Technology Centre at Umunneochi. This institute will run as a satellite to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike but will be more focused on Seed Technology. The Chairman quickly converted the forest along Lomara-Nneato Road for the establishment of the vast project. As a matter of fact, the office of the chairman through the Secretary to the Local Government is tracking the development from the development partners RAYSIDA. There have been high powered delegation to the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike and discussion is at top level. In short, the project will be the highest attraction ever by LGA chairmen.
In order to open the Road blocked by Military men at Lomara roundabout, the authority of the Forward Operation Base (F.O.B) agreed to remove the road block as soon as their frontage is covered with brick fencing. Therefore, the Chairman started the Fencing of FOB Military Base at Lomara Isuochi In Umunneochi. The project is on-going.The purpose of opening the road is to keep the forest areas busy with human traffic. This is one of the means adopted by the chairman to scare the kidnappers away from our bushes.
Recently, a landslide occured at Leru Ndawa road, putting the geography of the area in danger. The Chairman immediately started work to remedy the effects of the landslide. And as at time of filing this report, machines are working on the affected areas.
Renovation ongoing at council Headquarters: The beatification of the Council is one more area the chairman did not neglect. He started renovations and reticulation in the council from where the previous administration of Barr Eze Chikamnayo stopped. He went further to connect our LGA to National Electricity Grid. It is however noteworthy that, before now, Umunneochi uses generating sets to power the entire council, but Omenife has changed the story.
To support and encourage education, the administration of Chief Ifeanyi Madu paid for JAMB and National Entrance Exam for Unity Secondary Schools in favour of many people. Fortunately, 90% of the students and pupil that sat for the exams are successful. Their parents are full of gratitude to God for giving Ifeco to Umunneochi.
In the light of these, we in Umunneochi are expecting more people-friendly projects for the people’s chairman.
