Opinion: Kalu: The Benjamin of The Southeast By Uche Aguoru

In a continent where the elderly often dominate the political stage, there exists some youths whose silent yet powerful actions speak louder than words. One such individual is Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

His journey from a law student at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Listening to this lawmaker from Abia State narrate his experiences of how he navigated the hurdles of life through the university fills one with a deep sense of pride and admiration for this dynamic, young, and ebullient politician.

Kalu has proven to be a beacon of hope and a symbol of selfless leadership, embodying the qualities of the Biblical Benjamin and his global namesakes who have risen to historic prominence through their visionary leadership.

Benjamin Okezie Kalu’s star shone brightly during the recently held 37th convocation and 50th anniversary ceremony of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), an event that featured the creme of the Nigerian society ranging from Nigeria’s Senate President, former and sitting governors, Ministers, judicial luminaries, businessmen, and captains of industry from both within Nigeria and beyond, Kalu stood out as the clear highlight. His eloquence, insight, and grasp of both local and global political issues showcased not only his intellectual brilliance but also his readiness to lead.

Little wonder, he has become one of the most influential young politicians in Africa today.

The young Benjamin Kalu began his political journey as a local government chairman. His time at the grassroots level provided him with the invaluable experience and insight that many of his peers in national politics often lack. This early foundation laid the groundwork for his entry into national politics, where he would go on to become a major political force. Today, he holds the distinction of being the number six person in Africa’s largest political geography, Nigeria.

It’s instructive to note that Kalu’s path to the position of Deputy Speaker was not without its doubts and challenges. Many questioned his ability to lead effectively. Some believed that, given his youth, style, and panache, he might be too focused on personal gain to serve the greater good of his region. Such skepticism was not unwarranted; after all, young politicians often face the burden of proving that they can go beyond personal ambition to deliver meaningful results. Yet, like the Biblical Benjamin and other Benjamins who have risen to leadership positions in history, Kalu has shown that he is imbued with the rare gift of selfless leadership.

The term “Benjamin” in political parlance has come to symbolize individuals who, though often underestimated, are endowed with extraordinary leadership potential and always leave a remarkable place in the sands of history, a few examples include Benjamin Franklin, Founding Father of the United States, Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Harrison, an American politician and lawyer who served as the 23rd president of the United States, Benjamin Disraeli, who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Benjamin Rush, the signer of the United States Declaration of Independence just to name a few.

The Benjamins usually emerge not merely as followers of tradition but as catalysts of change, with the foresight and capability to chart new paths. Kalu has firmly established himself as one such leader.

His achievements in just two years as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives are nothing short of remarkable.
Yes, we all agree that he is not the first Southeasterner to occupy this esteemed position, but I stand to be challenged if his time has not been more impactful and result-oriented than that of his predecessor/s.

Under Kalu’s leadership, there has been a marked improvement in legislative activities, especially on issues affecting the Southeast region. His tireless advocacy for infrastructural development, security, and realization of projects that were once deemed impossible, especially in a region where the majority of the people have not aligned with the party in leadership.

We cannot also deny that he has championed the legislative reforms that is aimed at improving the economic and social conditions of the southeast, example the establishment of the South East Development Commission and other federal government establishments, he has exerted significant efforts in attracting federal appointments, youth empowerment and skill development initiatives that have provided thousands of young people in the Southeast with the tools and opportunities to succeed.

Kalu’s commitment to infrastructure development has been particularly evident in the numerous projects he has supported or initiated, many of which have transformed the region. His influence has spurred investment in critical areas such as roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, making tangible improvements to the quality of life for many in his constituency and beyond.

In addition to his achievements in infrastructure and empowerment, Kalu’s legislative achievements are profound. His leadership has been crucial in driving the passage of laws that promote social justice, economic growth, and national unity.

In politics the young Benjamin Kalu has built a reputation for his ability to navigate the complex web of Nigerian politics, balancing the demands of his party, his region, and the national interest, though a party man and leader, he has not shied away from challenging policies that hinder development and has consistently fought for the rights of the southeasterner.

Furthermore, Kalu’s diplomacy and ability to build cross-party alliances have positioned him as a trustworthy leader and key player in the political arena. His efforts in fostering national cohesion, bridging the gaps between different regions, and promoting peace and security are testament to his leadership maturity and vision.

In conclusion, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu is not just a product of his time; he is a trailblazer who is setting the stage for a new generation of Nigerian leaders. His exemplary achievements as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, coupled with his commitment to the development of his region and his people, positions him as an outstanding role model of selfless leadership and a true Igbo son.
