The Ohuhu Welfare Union Aba Branch held its Annual New Yam Festival (Iriji) on Sunday the 13th of October 2024,
In his opening speech, the President General of OWU Aba Branch, Chief Okechukwu Ekeoba, described the New Yam Festival as a revered ceremony in Igbo land. It is a time to show appreciation to God for all his blessings and mercy and for preserving and providing bountiful harvests to all Ohuhu indigenes at home and in the diaspora.
The Royal Father of the day, HRH Eze Nzenwata Mbakwe, In the company of the Chairman, Ohuhu Council of Traditional Rulers HRM Eze Ngwuli, HRH Eze Chikwekwem, and other traditional Rulers performed the conventional cutting of the new yam. He prayed for peace in Ohuhu and Nigeria as a whole. He also asked for God’s blessings and prosperity for all Ohuhu sons and daughters, regardless of their location or endeavors.
Chief Charles Nzechi, the Guest of Honour, and Ex-President Ohuhu Welfare Union World Wide barrister Johnson Kanu emphasized that the celebration promotes not only the culture and tradition of the Igbo people but also fosters unity and development. they advocated for the compulsory teaching and learning of Igbo language and culture in schools.
The event’s highlight was the recognition and honor bestowed upon prominent sons and daughters, as well as friends of Ohuhu, who have distinguished themselves in various fields and significantly contributed to the development of Ohuhu.

The event also featured the display of Ndi Ohuhu’s rich cultural heritage, including traditional dances and musical displays
