The Chairman, Ohuhu Council of traditional rulers and the Diawa of Umudiawa ancient kingdom, HRM Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu had called on political parties and the political elites to ensure that they carry the people along while choosing candidates for 2023 elections.
The monarch warned that any attempt to shortchange the masses by fielding unpopular candidates at all the stages of the election will not only result in voter aparthy, it is also likely to cause citizens revolt.
He said the people are tired of politicians who take up elective positions and government appointments for selfish purposes and also decried the situtuation where elected public office holders who climbed on the back of the people to get into offices will turn their backs on the people as soon as they get into offices, such practices which is common among politicians, discourage people from coming out to vote in future elections and also makes them lose confidence in the government and the political class.
Speaking to the News Gazette Online in his palace at Umudiawa, Ohuhu in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, Eze Ofoegbu, adviced the people to shun politicians without track record of performance or care for their people and also ensure that they go and get their voters cards inorder to vote out those already occupying government positions who refused to bring development close to the people.
He warned that the time has gone when people vote along party lines but rather the people should be encouraged to vote for individuals who has the interest of their people and community at heart.
The monarch said the quest for who becomes the next governor of the state should not be based on sectional sentimentality but rather we should look at some one who has the capacity and the passion to advance the development of the state beyond where it is today.
The traditional ruler who is also the National President, Christian Royal Father’s of Nigeria said the political class should carry the traditional rulers along by enquiring on the character and person of whoever that is aspiring to hold public office through their political platform, he said, as the custodian of the people they live amongst the people and understands the grassroots and at such they are in a best position to educate their people on who and how they should vote come the next election.
