The trend of clampdown in opposition voices Governor Alex Otti’s government has continued despite public condemnation trailing the recent sealing of the Renewed Hope Partners Office in Umuahia.
Abia State Government, under Governor Alex Otti, continues to display an alarming pattern of political intolerance and authoritarian tactics. In yet another blatant act of intimidation, the government this morning sealed a property belonging to a prominent opposition figure, Chief Charles Ogbonna (Evuleogu Ibeku), a respected member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), this action is not unconnected with the recent calls Chief Ogbonnaya on the governor to show transparency in the use of public funds.
This disturbing development follows a series of actions that clearly expose the administration’s targeted hostility towards opposition voices and individuals perceived to be sympathetic to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Only last week, the Otti-led government revoked a valid 25-year agreement between a notable Abia businessman, Chief Randie Ukanwoke, and the state government over Abia Hotels, Umuahia simply because the venue was used to host the Renewed Hope Agenda Rally in support of President Tinubu.
These ongoing acts of intimidation are not isolated. The present administration has, on several occasions, sanctioned some traditional rulers for openly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, thereweaponizing the machinery of state authority against citizens exercising their constitutional rights to association and expression.
What is unfolding in Abia State is not democratic governance it is tyranny and political persecution. It is a systematic attempt to silence opposition, suppress democratic participation, and undermine the national development agenda championed President Tinubu. Such actions are unbecoming of a government elected to serve all, regardless of political affiliation, and they stand in direct contradiction to the principles of fairness, tolerance, and democratic coexistence.
Governor Otti’s continued clampdown on dissenting voices constitutes a dangerous precedent and an assault on the democratic values cherished the people of Abia State and Nigeria as a whole.
The opposition in the state cannot be cowed such undemocratic behaviour, and let it be known that further attempt to stiffle opposition in the state will be resisted.
