Following the public outcry over the introduction of Pandemic prevention fee by the Abia state university’s management, The State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has cancelled the proposed payment of N15,000 by the students. Consequently the governor has approved the payment of N30,000 bursary to all students of Abia extraction in the institution.
When the News Gazette Online contacted Prof. Uche Ikonne, the Vice Chancellor of the university over the outcry by the public on the introduction of the Pandemic Prevention Fee, he said, “The decision was in agreement with the students so as to enable the school provide basic health equipment that will aid in prevention of the spread of covid-19 when the school resumes on Monday, the 9th of November 2020 since the covid-19 pandemic is still so much around and with us and we dont want to risk the health of our students when they come back to school, he however said the management of the school is awaiting further directives from the state governor concerning the fee “
The students were meant to pay the sum of 15,000 and present receipt upon resumption of school, but the state governor has cancelled the fee and approved the sum of 30,000 pocket money for Abia students to cushion the effects of economic hardship occasioned by the global lockdown.
