Abia State Government Suspends Monarch Over Alleged Support For Tinubu, Benjamin Kalu.
- The Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers has suspended His Royal Majesty, Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu, the Diawa of Umudiawa Ancient Kingdom, Oroko Abia, and Chairman of the Ndigbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Forum, over what it described as actions threatening unity among monarchs in the region.
In a letter dated June 27, 2025, but delivered to Eze Ofoegbu on July 3rd 2025,the council announced a six-month suspension on the monarch.
The letter was signed the Chairman of the Abia Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Sir Linus Mbah, signed two out of the three deputies.
According to the council, Eze Ofoegbu’s action is causing disunity and engendering discord among traditional rulers in the South East. The council further recommended that the Abia State Government withhold all stipends due to the monarch during the suspension period.
Eze Ofoegbu, a prominent voice in regional traditional leadership, has recently been at loggerheads with the state government over his vocal support for President Bola Tinubu and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
Many are of the opinion that the suspension may be politically motivated, coming after the Ndigbo Progressive traditional rulers forum honoured President Tinubu and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu with an award during the launch of Renewed Hope Partners in Bende, raising concerns over the autonomy of traditional institutions in the state. It is widely believed that the action is a direct response to open declaration of support for president Tinubu and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu Eze Ofoegbu and his group and not rooted in genuine administrative concerns.
In an interview with Eze Ofoegbu, the monarch is threatening to take legal actions against the council, insisting that he is being victimized because he has not committed any offence to warrant such an action the council and the council has no constitutional power to suspend him for exercising his constitutional rights of freedom of association belonging to an association duly registered with the CAC.
